Assessment of a Superelastic Beta TiMo Alloy for Biomedical Applications
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper reviews the unique metallurgical features, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of a beta TiMo based alloy for assessing its potentials as a biomaterial. TiMo based alloys at critical beta stability exhibit nonlinear pseudoelasticity. These alloys in cold worked condition also exhibit greatly extended linear elasticity and a low modulus much more closely matching those of human hard tissues. Wires fabricated from a TiMo based alloy of Ti-9.7Mo-4Nb-2V-3Al were studied. At the optimal processing condition, a recoverable strain as high as 3.5% can be achieved in both beta annealed as well as cold worked conditions. Other mechanical properties are discussed with respects to chemical composition and processing history. The unique elastic behavior and excellent corrosion resistance and biocompatibility suggest promising potentials of the alloy for biomedical applications.

Fabrication of Spiral Stent with Superelastic/ Shape Memory Nitinol Alloy for Femoral Vessel
Stent is a metal mesh tube for opening the obstructed vessels of the body. Ni-Ti alloy is a suitable metal for fabrication of stent due to its potential for applying the appropriate stress and strain to the vessel walls. In this study, super-elastic Nitinol wire was used to build stent samples usable to open femoral vessel. Ageing was performed at 500°C for different periods of time to determin...

In this study, a superelastic Ni-free Ti-based biomedical alloy was treated in surface by the implantation of nitrogen ions for the first time. The N-implanted surface was characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy, and the superficial mechanical properties were evaluated by nano-indentation and by ball-on-disk tribological tests. T...
متن کاملFatigue-crack propagation in Nitinol, a shape-memory and superelastic endovascular stent material.
Improving the design and performance of medical stents for implantation in the human body is of current interest. This paper describes a study of fatigue-crack propagation behavior in the superelastic alloy Nitinol. Specifically, the objective of this work was to study the effect of environment on cyclic crack-growth resistance in an approximately 50Ni-50Ti (atom %) alloy and to provide the nec...
متن کاملPerforming a Calcium-Phosphate Layer on Porous NiTi Alloy for Using in Orthopedic Applications
Porous NiTi alloys has a series of unique properties such as shape memory effect, superelastic behavior and energy absorbability that make them usable in a wide range of medical and industrial appliances. But the more probability of Ni release from a porous NiTi compare to the nonporous one has restricted it’s uses in implants. In the present research for resolving the problem, performing a cal...

In this study, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of two new biocompatible superelastic alloys, Ti-24Nb-0.5O and Ti-24Nb-0.5N (at.%), were investigated. Special attention was focused on the role of O and N addition on α(″) formation, supereleastic recovery and mechanical strength by comparison with the Ti-24Nb and Ti-26Nb (at.%) alloy compositions taken as references.
